Department Announcements
FREE FLU MIST
The Loudon County Health Department will be at all three schools during the week of September 27th to administer free flu mist to any student who has returned the required permission slip. This vaccine will protect your child from both regular flu and H1N1. All permission slips must be completed and returned to the school by September 15, 2010. Permission slips will be sent home by Friday, September 3rd. Click here if you would like to print a permission slip (Flu Mist Student Consent Form) or other related forms. If you have any questions, contact Mary Harding, Coordinated School Health Coordinator, at 988-2073.
LCHS Health Science Classes Participate in School System Health Screenings!
Wendy Miller’s Health Science Classes recently put their book knowledge to work when they provided health screenings over 1,000 students.  Health Science students conducted hearing and vision screening as well as blood pressure and height and weight.  The procedures these students perform mimic the same procedures that occur in a physician’s office so the experience is invaluable in preparing them for the real world of medical practice.  Ms. Miller’s class undergoes intensive training before going out into the schools to perform these screenings.  They are trained by the Lions Club of Telllico Village for vision and our school district speech therapist, Susan Holton, for hearing.  Ms. Miller emphasizes the importance of pediatric blood pressure since it is slightly different from adult blood pressure.  The screenings have resulted in approximately 30% of students requiring some form of follow-up either in the form of a rescreening or a call to the parents.  Several students have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, vision and hearing issues as a result of this screening.   All in all, this is an invaluable tool for both the students and their patients.See our slide show for the students in action!
Healthy Cooking Demo Recipes
If anyone attended the LCEF Fall Festival and didn't get a Healthy Cooking recipe package, please go to the Department Files below and open the TNCEP recipe folder to get a copy.  Many thanks to Pam McReynolds and the University of Tennessee Extension Service for providing the cooking demonstration and the recipes!  It was yummy AND good for you!
